Film Noir - definition

The term film noir, French for "black film".Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s.  Before the notion was widely adopted in the 1970s, many of the classic film noirs were referred to as melodramas.Film noir style : camera angles, dense shadows, a romantic, doom-laden atmosphere, always in shimmering, high-contrast black and white.
Noir's roots can be traced to American pulp literature and German cinema in the years immediately preceding the Great Depression and the Third Reich's rise to power. It's as if American tough guy writers were pre-destined to fall under the spell of a world-weary Teutonic femme fatale. The lighting used in film noir was very dark, creating long shadows, the characters always seemed to be set in dark, smoke filled rooms. The femme fatale was a portrayal of women as they had never been seen before. She was the exciting, illicit desire of the male protagonist. She could lure a man to commit murder for her own purposes. The murder would usually be that of the man's wife. In film noir, the gender roles had changed, the woman was usually the stronger character and sometimes the villain.

New Build -evaluation

What I have done:

  • I took pictures of the building (wide angle) and inside , took pictures of the college facilities, art department, students while doing work.
  • I organized the photos in power point
  • I wrote 2 pages of why you should come to Barnet College and what the college offers you.
  • I wrote some opinions about the College
I could have improved on: reading the brief more carefully and organize the pictures on the slide as it was said.
The presentation didn't last for more than 2 minutes, I could have taken more pictures and talk more about the College.
Overall I think I have done a good job but there's space for improvement and I learned that a good plan is needed before you make a presentation.

New Build - plan

Here are some bullet points of how I'm thinking of doing my presentation and the pictures I will take.

  • power point presentation
  • pictures: low angle  and wide of the building (inside and from outside), pictures of the students doing their work, pictures of the College facilities ( lift, cafeteria, etc. ), pictures of the art and photography department (darkroom, studio )
  • I will write notes to get ready for the presentation
  • I will present it as what the College has to offer and will describe the pictures I took.

New Build- research

Research

For my research I looked up in the Barnet College Part-time course guide 2010/2011 for photographs of the college I would like to include in my presentation and some I didn't like as much .
